Massage therapy?

According to the Professional Association the FHT Survey Sheets on 19 April, 2016, has found that body massage is most popular complementary therapy demanded by clients.

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of tissues, such as connective tissues and muscles, joints and ligaments, in the body to relieve stress, chronic conditions and muscle overuse.
The tissues manipulated include muscles, joints, connective tissues, ligaments, and tendons. It has been practiced for thousands of years.

A massage therapy has a lot of benefits. They range from treating chronic and acute illnesses, to providing for the overall emotional and physical well-being.

How does a massage therapy affect the body?

Thoughts about a massage session are usually accompanied with those of pleasure and relaxation. Although this may be true, one may mistakenly think that a massage is just but another pampering session — it is not. A good massage actually does miracles for the mind and the body and it has many positive effects.

There are eleven major organ systems in the human body, so depending on what you want to achieve with your massage, each of them is affected differently.

The main effects include:

  • Increasing blood flow
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Reducing pain
  • Improving skin condition, texture and tone
  • Relaxing
  • Managing pain
  • Reducing menstrual cramps
  • Improving stiff joints

Due to the popularity of massages, they are of many different types. They include; aromatherapy, Thai, deep tissue, chair, shiatsu, pregnancy. Swedish, and sports massages among others.

The most common ones are discussed below.

Swedish massage

This is the most common type of massage. It is mostly for relaxation and energizing. The western concepts of physiology and anatomy are the base of Swedish massage. It is especially helpful if you are recovering from an injury because of its relaxing effect. The therapist begins the massage with general strokes, and finishes with specific strokes. The specific strokes are for addressing the specific problem areas.

Hot stone massage

Just as the name suggests, this kind of massage uses warm stones. Stones placed on specific pressure points on the body and held down as you are massaged. The basalt warm stones relax you and loosen tight muscles. As a result, this helps the therapist to easily reach the areas of muscle tension.

Back, neck, and shoulder massage

It includes the massage treatment for only the back, neck and shoulder areas. This massage is best to relieve tense shoulders because it focuses on the neck and shoulder muscles. It also lessens neck and back pain, which may be acquired from sleeping wrongly or straining. Moreover, it could help to ease a strained nerve.

Who provides massage therapy?

A massage therapy cannot be performed by just anyone — at least not a good one.
For you to get the full benefits of a massage session, a professional therapist should perform it. A masseuse, or a masseur is best for a productive session.
