Pedicure Treatments Explained

Pedicures are more often than not thought to be all about toe nails. This cannot be farther from the truth. To fully understand what they are all about, we will start by defining them.

A pedicure is a cosmetic treatment for your feet that is aimed at softening hard skin, removing dead skin, and shaping and treating your toe nails. Sounds heaven-like, doesn’t it? Well, that is what a good foot treatment will do to you – take you to heaven.

From the definition we understand that on top of beautifying your nails, a good pedicure will involve the rest of your foot for you to get the full benefits of the treatment. Some of these benefits are discussed below.

What Is A Pedicure Good For?

Contrary to popular belief, feet are very delicate and can be affected by many everyday activities that we deem normal.

High heels, synthetic socks, pantyhose, and uncomfortable and narrow shoes all play a part in deteriorating the condition of the heat.

It is for the reason that we all need a good pedicure from time to time which can also help in;

Removing Calluses From Your Feet

Resulting from constantly wearing high heels or from ill-fitting shoes, a callus in caused by constant pressure and friction on certain areas of your feet.

It appears in the form of an unsightly thick skin and can cause you pain and infections. A simple moisturizing lotion and a professional foot scrub go a long way in saving you from this.

Relaxing Your Feet

The best part about a pedicure is that its effects reach out farther than just your feet. It involves a foot and leg massage to help one ease tension on joints and muscles.

The pressure points on your feet will help you feel relaxed, rejuvenated, and energized after the treatment.

Detection Of Signs Of Nail And Feet Illness

It is not easy to find someone who checks his or her feet from time to time, looking for signs of illnesses.

A regular pedicure will help you out with this as the pedicurist can easily detect problems with your feet, especially if you have a specific pedicurist.

Exfoliation Of The Feet

The removal of dead skin from the feet prevents the forming of bunions and corns, which result from the accumulation of cells. It is also important to help keep your feet as soft and as attractive as can be.

Beautifying Your Nails

This, being the primary goal for a pedicure is good for self-confidence, and overall look.

The nails, after being trimmed and cut, will be beautified according to your preference, making them, and you look lovely and clean-cut.

What To Expect?

The procedures that are adopted by a pedicurist are generally the same, but give different results depending on the know-how of the pedicurist.

It is therefore very important to find a good pedicurist if it is your first time.

The process starts by removing all the nail polish that you had on using a nail polish remover, after which your feet are placed into a warm foot bath with scented water to soften your skin.

While soaking, your feet are rubbed and exfoliated to remove all dead skin and calluses using salt and minerals, after which they are removed from the bath, wiped and a cuticle softener is applied on your nails.

Using a cuticle pusher, the cuticle is pushed back carefully or trimmed if necessary.

The pedicurist then trims, files, and shapes your nails to the perfect size and shape for the type of pedicure that you want.

It is only after this that the massage comes into play. Using creams and aromatherapy oils, your feet are massaged to soften and refresh your skin.

Depending on the type of pedicure, your lower legs may also be massaged.

The nail polish comes in last with three or four layers starting with the base coat, two colour coats, and a top coat to prevent chipping.

Different Types Of Pedicures

Unknown to many people, pedicures are of various types. Picking among them is not necessarily difficult since they all give different results depending on what you want. They include:

Regular Pedicure

This is a simple and to-the-point type of pedicure. The treatment involves soaking your feet in a tub of warm water with salts and fragrances for a couple of minutes before they are scrubbed using either a stone or a foot file.

After removing them from the tub, the nails are clipped and filed into shape, then left to dry well for the polish to hold.

As they dry, a moisturizer is used to massage the foot from the toes to the heel. The polish is then applied as per your specifications.

Spa Pedicure

This is just like the regular pedicure, but on steroids. On top of the procedure that is used in the regular pedicure, this involves using of a salt scrub, soaking of feet in a paraffin wax or using of a foot mask.

The paraffin wax is used to remove hard and dead skin. The mud mask can be compared to the face mask, but this is for feet.

It helps with removing dead skin and for overall relaxation. The salt scrub is an efficient exfoliating technique.

Pedicure With Stones

This is more a massage than it is a pedicure. It features all the amenities of a regular pedicure, but this one also involves the use of hot stones to rub down the feet to loosen the muscles.

These types of pedicures help people relax, and aid in relieving sore muscles, pains and aches.

French Pedicure

The French pedicure gets its name from the nail polishing part. The procedure followed is the same as that of a regular pedicure.

When it comes to nail polishing, the nails are painted either light pink or colorless. The tips of the nails are painted pure white. This leaves one with an elegant and sophisticated look.

Mini Pedicure

Just like the name suggests, this type is very short, direct, and inexpensive. It generally involves removing the previous polish, filing the nails into shape, removing of cuticle and re-polishing the toenails.

The scrubbing and the massage part are skipped. This is actually the type of pedicure that most people, unknowingly, give themselves.

Pedicure With Gel Polish

It is just the same as a regular pedicure, but it has a twist towards the end. Instead of using nail polish, this one used gel polish.

It is a very popular choice for pedicures as the gel lasts for months without chipping.

Good To Know

To keep your feet looking as beautiful and amazing after that much-needed treatment, you should;

  • Wear open shoes for the rest of the day after the pedicure.
  • Make sure the polish is completely dry before you tamper with your beautiful nails.
  • Keep your feet moisturized regularly.
  • Dry your feet properly, especially between the toes.
  • Cut your toe nails, not too short, not with sharp corners, but straight across.
