Waxing Treatments Explained

Waxing is a semi-permanent method of body hair removal that involves removal of the hair from the root.

It’s much more reliable than the other methods because it leaves your skin soft and clear of any possible regrowth for at least a couple of weeks.

If you want a soft, comfortable, and long-lasting result, waxing is the way to go.

Waxing stands out from all the methods of hair removal which include threading, use of hair removal cream, banishing body hair, epilation, and shaving, as it is the most common and the most preferred for its effectiveness.

Waxing is a field of cosmetology in which to get beauty, one has to experience some pain.

The pain is made tolerable by use of painkillers, heated wax, and the firm hand of a beauty therapist.

Due to the fear of what will be painful and the coarseness of the hair, the first time is usually the most unpleasant but with consistency, it becomes a walk in the park.

Waxing, however, is one of those processes that you can neither do to yourself, nor tell someone with no experience to do it for you; you need a professional.

Attempting to do it yourself puts you at risk of skin damage and bruising.

Body hair grows differently throughout the body. Almost every part of the body can be waxed since there are endless types of waxing that people engage in.

There are the common areas such as facials, arms, stomach, chest, bikini area, and legs.

There are also the not-so-common one’s like the beard, inside the ear and nose hairs.

What To Expect

Depending on the preferred type of waxing and the part of the body involved, different processes will be employed.

The preparation for the wax treatments of each type is generally the same. They involve skin care and proper knowledge of your allergies, skin conditions, and the medications that you are taking at the moment.

To clear the air, a little pain is inevitable during a wax treatment. So if this is your first time, be ready to experience a little pain.

The only thing that you can do is work to minimize the pain by taking the right steps to prepare for waxing and employ proper aftercare steps.

The following procedures are generally followed when:

Waxing your face, however improbable it sounds, can be done on the brow, cheeks, chin and the upper lip.

Unlike tweezing, waxing, gives excellent and long-lasting results. Waxing can easily achieve and maintain a beautiful and smooth face.

If you booked an appointment to have your eyebrows shaped by waxing, it typically starts with the eyebrow technician sitting down with you and discussing your preferences and your condition.

The process begins after deciding the area that you want to be waxed. It is cleansed, wiped, and finally waxed with warm or hot wax. It will sting a little but as you the technician goes ahead, it becomes bearable.

Afterwards, a wax cleanser and a soother are spread to remove any residual hairs and relieve any irritation. You are now good to go after the strays have been tweezed off.

Tweezing and using hair removal cream on the upper lip hairs is more often than not a hassle. The irritation that follows is unbearable.

Even though this area is sensitive, it is not as painful as other areas of the body. The hair is taken care of for up to a month and will neither grow back faster nor thicker.

Body (Legs and Arms)

For such large parts, promising a painless experience would be impossible. The hair on your legs and hands have been accustomed to a certain growing pattern – if it is your first time – and waxing is about to change that.

With that, you can only depend on the tips that your therapist will lay down to you to minimize the pain as he waxes you.

You should avoid all exfoliating your skin twenty-four hours before going for your wax treatment.

Afterwards, make sure to moisturize and avoid direct sunlight on them for at least another twenty-four hours.

You should also, before going in for a wax treatment, study your skin for things such as lesions, moles, and skin tags.

These can tear off while ripping off the strips, so you should let your technician know to avoid those areas.

If you want to wax your underarms, you should avoid deodorants and antiperspirants twenty-four hours before the appointment.

Bikini Area

If you had no prior knowledge, the pubic area can be waxed just like any other part of the body.

Depending on what you want, there are three types of waxing that can be used for this area.

They include bikini line wax, Hollywood wax, and Brazilian wax. The procedure followed, generally speaking, is the same for the three types. It’s only the results that differ.

Your appointment is best that is booked a week after your menstrual cycle. It is at this time that you have the highest pain tolerance.

You should also take a painkiller, say an ibuprofen or paracetamol roughly thirty to sixty minutes before waxing.

Your hair should be grown to at least a quarter of an inch for the waxing to be much easier.

24 hours before your appointment, it is recommended that you exfoliate your bikini line and use moisturizer to soften your skin.

Also, avoid direct sunlight at all costs, 24 hours before and after your appointment.

Types of Waxing

There are two basic types of waxing. Both of them use beeswax or a wax base paraffin, lubricator, and resin.

The resin and the lubricator help the hair follicles get attached to the wax easily and smoothen the process.

Soft Waxing

This method is otherwise referred to as strip waxing. This is so because a strip has to be used to remove the hair.

For it to work, your hair ought to be a quarter of an inch in length, at the very least.

Soft waxing is usually used for large areas with soft hair. It starts by heating the wax in special wax heaters.

A thin layer is applied in the direction of hair growth, then taken off quickly in the opposite direction.

After the technician is done waxing you, he applies a soothing cream or oil to the regions to act as a skin barrier and to remove excess wax if any left on your skin.

The soft wax used may differ in quality depending on the brand since different companies make products using different ingredients.

It is more painful than hard waxing because of its stickiness, but very fast and effective. It can be used for arms, legs, and back.

Hard or Hot Waxing

Unlike soft waxing, this does not require a strip to remove the spread wax, hence the name stripless wax.

The wax used is slightly warmer than in soft waxing to help open up the pores and remove hair easier. Part of this is because it is used for delicate skin.

It involves applying a layer of oil on the region to protect the skin before, spreading the wax. It can be used for sensitive areas such as underarms, bikini, and face.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Waxing

  • Waxing prevents hair from growing back quickly. It takes at least three and at most eight weeks to grow back, all dependent on the person.
  • It saves a lot of time. This is true if you compare the time taken to wax an area to the time taken to remove hair off the same region if an alternative method is employed.
  • Continuous waxing makes the hair fine, sparse, and delicate. It also reduces the rate at which hair of a certain area grows.
  • It is best for the instant clearing of areas with large and thick hair growth.

  • The hair, though rarely, can tear off at the surface, causing itchiness or redness.
  • An infected skin may intensify after waxing.
  • Improper aftercare may cause ingrown hairs.

Post Treatment Care

After getting those amazing results, you need to take care to maintain them as they are for the longest time possible. The following tips ought to help you.

  • You should keep the area moisturized regularly, using artificial or natural moisturizers such as tea tree oil and Aloe Vera. Natural ones are more preferable. You can also use a cream that has antiseptic properties. They help to relieve irritations.
  • Exfoliate the area at least twice a week to remove dead skin cells.
  • Keep the waxed areas clean and dry. This helps keep the sensitive skin away from dirt which may accumulate, causing infections.
  • For the next twenty-four hours, avoid chlorinated water.
  • Dead Sea salt is a good remedy if one is prone to infection after a waxing treatment.
  • For the next twenty-four hours after waxing, you should avoid direct sunlight and exercises.
  • Tight clothes can cause more redness and irritation if worn immediately after waxing.
  • Immediately after waxing, it is common practice to pour some ice water or apply ice cubes in the area. The cold helps close the pores and reduce redness.

Question - Answer

These are the two forms of bikini waxing. They are used interchangeably but differ in terms of the result. The Brazilian wax leaves a strip/shape (triangle/square) of hair at the front of the bikini area if you desire.

If not, it automatically becomes a Hollywood wax ( or “bare wax”), which removes all the hair around and beyond your bikini area. A Hollywood wax usually refers to hair removal from your belly button to your buttocks.

This is dependent on the density of the hair growth. It will take between thirty and sixty minutes.

For appreciable results, your hair has to be at least a quarter to half an inch. For those with coarse hair, which is smoothened by continuous waxing, it should be closer to a half inch.

The softer the hair gets, the shorter the minimum length requirement for waxing.

With improper aftercare, you are definitely at risk of getting ingrown hairs.

You can use an aspirin based anti-inflammatory sprays to combat ingrown hairs if they have already appeared. To prevent them, use a moisturizer such as Aloe Vera and don’t forget to exfoliate at least twice a week.

Frequent waxing not only reduces the sensitivity of your skin; it also makes your hairs softer. It is recommended that you should wax at least once in four weeks for the finest outcome.

This duration may be shorter depending on the rate of growth of your hair. In time, frequent waxing also reduces the amount of hair that grows on the area in time.

It is during this time that your hair grows fastest, thanks to your hormones. It is generally considered safe to wax even though your skin is more sensitive during this time.

You need to disclose the following health conditions before you are waxed to prevent any health implications afterwards.

  • Allergies – wax brands are made using different types of ingredients which may include fruits that you may be allergic to
  • If you have undergone any radiation treatments
  • if you have any skin Diseases
  • Supplements that you have been taking
  • Lesions, moles, and skin tags
  • Hypersensitive skin
  • Diabetes

It is of vital importance to not shave in the middle of waxing appointments. This is so because shaving will interfere with the process, and fuel hair growth rate.
